To calculate ROI, subtract what you put in from what you got back, divide by what you put in, then multiply by 100. ROI % = ((Final Value - Initial Investment) / Initial Investment) x 100. Turning $10,000 into $15,000 is a $5,000 gain on a $10,000 outlay, which is a 50% ROI.

Return on investment, or ROI, answers a practical question: did the money you put into an investment, project, campaign, or asset produce enough gain to justify the cost? It is one of the simplest ways to compare opportunities, but the result is only useful when the inputs include the right costs and the time period is understood.
Calculate ROI by subtracting the investment cost from the final value, dividing that profit by the investment cost, and multiplying by 100.
ROI = (Final Value - Cost) / Cost x 100
Example: if you invest $1,000 and the investment is later worth $1,200, the profit is $200. ROI = $200 / $1,000 x 100 = 20%.
ROI percentage is useful because it normalizes returns across different investment sizes. A $200 gain on $1,000 is 20% ROI. A $2,000 gain on $20,000 is 10% ROI. The second gain is larger in dollars, but the first is more efficient as a percentage.

For a marketing campaign, cost may include ad spend, tools, creative work, agency fees, and discounts. For equipment, cost may include purchase price, installation, maintenance, training, and financing.
Use net profit rather than revenue when possible. A campaign that produces $10,000 in sales is not automatically a strong ROI if product costs, fees, returns, and advertising spend consume most of the revenue.
Basic ROI does not account for time. A 20% ROI in one year is very different from a 20% ROI over ten years. Annualized ROI converts the total return into a yearly rate, making it better for comparing investments held over different periods. For longer investing comparisons, also review CAGR.
ROI can hide risk, timing, cash flow, taxes, fees, and reinvestment assumptions. It also cannot tell you whether an investment was volatile or whether the return was repeatable. Treat ROI as a first-pass comparison, then use more specific metrics when the decision involves time, debt, taxes, or recurring cash flows.
Subtract the initial investment from the final value, divide by the initial investment, then multiply by 100. A $10,000 investment now worth $15,000 gives ($15,000 - $10,000) / $10,000 x 100 = 50% ROI.
ROI % = ((Final Value - Initial Investment) / Initial Investment) x 100. The denominator is always what you invested, not what you ended with. Dividing by the final value instead is the most common error and understates the return.
It is the same calculation. ROI is conventionally expressed as a percentage rather than a ratio, so the x 100 step is part of the standard formula. A 0.5 ratio and a 50% ROI describe the same result.
Use annualised ROI, because a raw percentage ignores how long your money was tied up. Annualised ROI = ((Final / Initial)^(1/years) - 1) x 100. The 50% gain above earned over 3 years is 14.47% a year, which is the number to compare against other investments.
Divide the total return by the number of years only for a rough average, and use the annualised formula when accuracy matters. Simple division ignores compounding and overstates longer holding periods.
Use profit rather than revenue. Marketing ROI = ((Revenue x Profit Margin) - Marketing Cost) / Marketing Cost x 100. On $7,000 of revenue at a 40% margin from $2,000 of spend, gross profit is $2,800, so ROI is ($2,800 - $2,000) / $2,000 x 100 = 40%. Using the raw $7,000 would show 250% and be meaningless.
Total the benefit the project delivers over its life, subtract the running costs and the build cost, then divide by the build cost. Include ongoing costs, because a project with a large monthly overhead can post a strong first-year figure and still lose money.
It depends on the alternative and the risk. Compare against what the same money would have earned elsewhere over the same period. A 14% annualised return is strong against a broad market average near 7% to 10%, but not if it required far more risk to get there.
Calculating marketing ROI accurately requires more than comparing revenue to ad spend alone, since ad platform fees, creative production costs, tools/software subscriptions, and the labor cost of the team running the campaign all reduce the true return if left out. A campaign that looks highly profitable when measured against ad spend alone can turn out to be marginal or unprofitable once these fully-loaded costs are included, which is why experienced marketers distinguish between "media ROI" (ad spend only) and "fully-loaded ROI" (all associated costs) when reporting results internally.
ROI measures how much profit an investment generates relative to its cost, while payback period measures how long it takes to recover the initial cost, and the two metrics can favor different decisions. A project with a high ROI but a long payback period ties up capital for years before returning it, which matters if you might need that capital sooner for another opportunity or an emergency. A project with a shorter payback period but lower overall ROI returns your capital faster, giving you flexibility to redeploy it, even though its total profitability is lower. Comparing both metrics side by side, rather than relying on ROI alone, gives a fuller picture of which option fits your actual liquidity needs and risk tolerance.
