How much decking do I need?
Divide the deck width by the effective coverage of one board, board width plus gap, converted to feet, to get rows, multiply by boards per row, then add 10, 15% waste. Our deck material calculator does all four steps for you; a 20×12 ft deck with 5.5″ boards and 12 ft board lengths takes 26 rows, about 58 boards (696 linear feet purchased) with 10% waste.
How many deck boards do I need per square foot?
With standard 5.5-inch boards and a 1/4-inch gap, each linear foot of board covers about 0.479 sq ft, so plan on roughly 2.1 linear feet of installed decking per square foot of deck area. Purchased footage runs higher once board-format scrap (rounding each row up to a full board) and 10, 15% waste are included.
What is a board foot?
A board foot is a lumber volume unit equal to 144 cubic inches, a board 1″ thick × 12″ wide × 1 ft long. The formula is Thickness(in) × Width(in) × Length(ft) ÷ 12. Hardwood is priced per board foot at the yard, making this the essential unit when budgeting oak, maple or walnut.
How do you calculate roof pitch and convert footprint to roof area?
Pitch is rise over a 12-inch run (6:12 = 6 inches of rise per foot). Multiply your flat footprint area by the slope factor √(1 + (pitch÷12)²): for a 6:12 roof the factor is 1.118, so a 1,000 sq ft footprint needs shingles for 1,118 sq ft.
How much concrete do I need for a 10×10 slab?
A 10 ft × 10 ft × 4 in slab is 1.23 cubic yards, about 56 × 80-lb bags or 74 × 60-lb bags, before adding 5, 10% for waste. At more than ~1 yd³, ready-mix delivery is usually cheaper and far faster.
How much gravel do I need, and how many tons is that?
Volume = L × W × Depth(in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27 yards. Crushed stone weighs about 1.4 tons per cubic yard (pea gravel 1.35, river rock 1.5), so multiply yards by the density, then add ~10% for compaction.
How many bags of mulch make a cubic yard?
13.5 standard 2-cu-ft bags (or nine 3-cu-ft bags) equal one cubic yard, because a yard is 27 cubic feet. At typical prices, bulk mulch beats bags once you pass roughly 1.5, 2 yards.
What waste percentage should contractors add?
Industry norms: 10, 15% for decking and lumber (more for diagonal layouts), 10% for shingles, 5, 10% for concrete, 10% for gravel (compaction) and ~5% for bulk mulch. Steep or complex projects sit at the top of each range.
