Add your net worth and a future earnings buffer, then subtract your existing auto and home liability limits. The remainder is the umbrella coverage needed to fully protect your assets, typically rounded up to the nearest $1 million policy increment.
Umbrella Coverage = (Net Worth + Future Earnings Buffer) − Existing Liability Limits
Umbrella insurance protects assets you've already accumulated from being seized in a lawsuit judgment that exceeds your underlying auto or home insurance liability limits. Because a judgment can, in theory, target any asset you own, the widely used rule of thumb is to carry umbrella coverage at least equal to your total net worth, so a worst-case judgment doesn't wipe out your accumulated savings and investments.
Beyond current assets, a large judgment can also lead to wage garnishment against future income, which is why some people add a buffer for expected future earnings, particularly higher earners with many working years ahead, when sizing their umbrella policy. This is a more conservative approach than net worth alone.
Umbrella insurance sits "on top of" your existing auto, home, and other liability policies: it only pays out after those underlying policies' limits are exhausted, and typically requires you to carry minimum liability limits on those underlying policies to qualify. This layered structure is why umbrella coverage is relatively inexpensive, insurers are only on the hook for large claims beyond what your primary policies already cover.
While anyone can benefit from the added protection, umbrella insurance is particularly valuable for homeowners, people who frequently host guests, own a pool or trampoline, drive often, serve on a board (personal, not corporate, liability), or otherwise have elevated liability exposure relative to their standard policies' default limits.
A common rule of thumb is to carry umbrella coverage at least equal to your total net worth, since a liability judgment exceeding your net worth puts future income and assets at risk. Some also add a buffer for future earning potential.
Umbrella insurance provides additional liability coverage above the limits of your underlying home, auto, or other policies, and can also cover certain claims (like libel or slander) that standard policies may exclude.
Umbrella insurance is generally inexpensive relative to the coverage it provides, often a few hundred dollars per year for $1 million in additional coverage, since it only pays out after underlying policy limits are exhausted.
